Hyderabad: In a landmark move symbolising dignity, empowerment and social inclusion, the Congress government in Telangana has facilitated the induction of 20 transgender persons as security guards in Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).
Handing over the appointment letters at his chambers on Tuesday, Minister for SC, ST, Minorities, Disabled and Transgender Welfare, Adluri Laxman Kumar, said, “Transgenders are not lesser beings; they are individuals who deserve to live with their heads held high. The government is committed to ensuring them a life of self-respect.”
The Minister observed that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier extended opportunities to transgender persons who were once forced to survive by seeking alms at traffic signals by engaging them in traffic regulation. The appointment of 20 members as Metro security guards stands as another historic step under the visionary leadership of the Chief Minister,” he noted.
The recruitment drive received nearly 400 applications, from which skilled and eligible candidates were shortlisted, Adluri Laxman Kumar said, assuring continued governmental support for the community.
“This is not merely a job, it is an opportunity to prove your worth and inspire thousands more. The Chief Minister’s commitment is to ensure that you live with dignity and pride,” the Minister added.
Senior IAS officer Anita Ramachandran, Secretary, Women and Child Welfare & SC Development, remarked, “For long, society has looked down upon transgenders. Now, a transformation is taking shape. Even a small step can trigger a profound social change. If you work with honesty, recognition will follow.”
The Telangana government has already rolled out several welfare initiatives for the community, including dedicated counselling rooms in hospitals, ‘Maitri’ clinics for mental health support, identity cards, skill development programmes, and financial assistance without banking linkages.
